We lost a close friend this week
Martin mc Brearty
From Cill Charthaigh – Kilcar
A craftsman, teacher, gentleman – and a cool guy
Who without exception loved his work
Martin fished from Cladnageragh Pier in his earlier years
More recently he built walls in the area
Our time with Martin was priceless
His stone work – like himself – came natural and easy
He helped build the limewindow cottage
Each day beside Martin was a pleasure and a privilege
A treasure of a man
In our hearts forever
Genuinely looked forward to meeting Martin each September on Inis Oirr.
A gentle, interesting, talented man. Probably knew more about stone than most of us but never let on, was happier talking and listening to the banter every day.
My sympathies to all of you close to him, he will be missed.
Dear Louise,
It is with deep sadness and shock that I read your beautiful and fitting tribute to Martin. He was such a lovely, friendly and gentle man. Every time that I met Martin he made me feel so welcome and he was always generous with his time and helpful advice. I will miss the smile that was not only on his face, but more importantly, in his heart. My sincere condolences to his family and all the stone men and women whom I know in Donegal. May he Rest in Peace.
A sound man. May he rest in piece.
Will remember Martin every time I pass these lovely walls
Louise, that is a beautiful tribute you gave to Martin. Its hard to believe he is gone and when you see the photos of him having the craic and been happy in his work, its even harder.
Your memorial to him is a truly wonderful piece – without knowing the man myself, your words & pictures were a work of such illustrative power that it wrung my heart. He looked so hale & hearty and happy at his work, which will endure long after any of us, that it is hard to believe he is gone.
He is the man that brough me into the world and the man that made me proud to be his son every day since. This tribute brought a tear to my eye, but more importantly a smile to my face! A wonderful father, an excellent teacher, and most of all a gentleman to all who he met. Thank you Louise and all the other wonderful people for filling this time of sadness and mourning, with stories and laughter. Love Ciaran, Sharon, Declan and Francis mc Brearty.
Rest in peace Martin..
Martin was a unique man in more ways than one! He was an honest, hard-working man and always a delight to meet. His friendly demeanour, warm personality and frankness testified to his sound character. I have to say I was always pleased to meet him and have a chat, whether brief or extended.
Dear Louise and all the stone gang in Donegal,
I am so sad to hear the news about Martin. He was a lovely man. The wonderful tribute and photos here really say it all. Thank you for that.
My thoughts are with you all and with Martin’s family. May he rest in peace.
Every time I worked with Martin or spock to him I left him with a smile on my face ,he’s a big miss
